Poker Basics – Learn about Cards and Hands

Filed under: , , by: Cameron Love

The exciting card game of Poker has numerous versions and Card Draw is the easiest among them for a beginner. First you have to understand the cards and their values.

A standard deck of 52 cards is usually required to play Poker. Ross Perot Poker is the only exception. It is played with lesser number of cards. The ranks of the cards are in the descending order:

Ace
King
Queen
Jack
10
9
8
7
6
5
4
3
2

The cards are divided into 4 suits- Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts and Spades. All the suits have same value.

Each player has to deal with 5 cards. The winner will have the highest-valued hand. The hands are ranked in the following order:

Royal Flush: It is the most valuable hand in the game of Poker. It consists of 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace.

Straight Flush: A Straight Flush includes 5 cards in numerical order. They are from the same suit. If there are two Straight Flushes at the table, the winner will be the one which has the highest card value.

Four of a Kind: It consists of 4 cards having the same numerical status and another random card.

Full House: Of the 5 cards, 3 have the same numerical status and the other two also have the same rank. First the tie of Three of a Kind is broken and the Pair.

Flush: A Flush consists of 5 cards of the same suit, whatever be their numerical status.

Straight: It comprises 5 cards in numerical order, whatever be their suits.

Three of a Kind: It consists of 3 cards having the same numerical rank and 2 random cards which are not a pair.

Two Pair: It included 2 sets of pairs and another random card.

One Pair: It consists of 1 pair and 3 random cards.

High Card: The player who has the highest-valued card (2 as the lowest and the Ace as the highest) wins.
